Foods to Avoid for Osteoporosis Patients
A medical condition in the bones that make it weak and fragile is called osteoporosis. In this condition, fractures can quickly occur. This mostly affects older women post-menopause to a larger extent. The symptoms of osteoporosis are a stooped posture, back pain, and breaking of bones. However, eating a well-balanced diet, regular exercise, and medications such as Evenity and Prolia are the first line of treatment of osteoporosis. The following food options help in making the bones strong:
1. Caffeine
A lot of caffeine intake is not an excellent choice for those who have infinity to break bones easily. Research has shown that due to high levels of caffeine intake, there is a reduction in calcium absorption by the body. But the good news is that with a slight reduction of caffeine intake and the intake of about 800mg of calcium supplement a day, osteoporosis reduces. Research has proven this.
2. High-protein diet
It is essential not to have a high protein diet to prevent oneself from being diagnosed with osteoporosis. Such a diet is to be avoided as it could lead to bone loss.
3. Salt
Salt has a high level of sodium. Hence having too much salty food can lead to an increase in the sodium levels in the body. This increases the level of excretion of calcium through the urine, thus making the bones weak.
4. Alcohol
The amount of level consumption needs to be reduced for being able to be diagnosed with osteoporosis. With more alcohol consumption, there is the chance and risk of absorption of calcium and vitamin D, two essentials for maintaining bone strength.
5. Vitamin A
Too much vitamin A needs to be avoided with osteoporosis. There is research to prove that too much vitamin A intake negatively affects the ability to maintain healthy bones.
6. Sodas
Sodas are among the foods to avoid with osteoporosis as they damage the bone density, making the bones weak. Phosphorus is present in these soda preparations, and taking in excess amounts of phosphorus leads to a decrease in bone density.
7. Wheat bran
There is a high level of phytates in the wheat bran, which reduces calcium absorption in the body. You can have wheat bran if you take calcium supplements in your diet. Remember to keep a gap of at least three hours between the consumption of wheat bran and calcium supplements.
8. Beans
Like wheat bran, beans have a high level of phytates, and hence it is a food item to be avoided with osteoporosis. But if you are a bean lover, you can reduce the quantity of phytates by soaking the beans to be cooked in water for around two to three hours.
9. Sugar
High sugar intake leads to an increase in blood sugar levels. These high blood sugar levels lead to calcium excretion through the urine, which does not go well with osteoporosis patients. Hence this is also a food to avoid if you have osteoporosis.
